Chicago Teen Fighting Cancer Dies After Father's Illegal Immigration Detention
February 16, 2026
A 16-year-old Chicago girl, Ofelia Torres, died on Friday after battling a rare and aggressive cancer. She had been fighting stage 4 alveolar rhabdomyosarcoma since late 2024. During her treatment, her father, Ruben Torres Maldonado, was illegally detained by immigration authorities in October while shopping at Home Depot. This detention was part of a large immigration enforcement campaign called Operation Midway Blitz under the Trump administration.
A judge ruled that Ruben’s arrest was illegal, and he was released on October 30. Ofelia spoke openly about the pain caused by her father’s detention, saying, "I find it so unfair that hardworking immigrant families are being targeted because they were not born here." She urged respect and love for immigrant families, emphasizing their humanity.
The case gained public attention, showing the harsh reality of immigration policies targeting families. Homeland Security criticized Ruben, calling his legal fight "nothing more than a desperate hail Mary attempt." Days before Ofelia’s death, a judge blocked Ruben’s deportation, citing family hardship and opening a path to potential citizenship.
Ofelia’s family praised her bravery. Their attorney said, "Ofelia was heroic and brave in the face of ICE’s detention and threatened deportation of her father." Ofelia also worked on school projects about the high cost of healthcare and discussed Medicaid fears with Illinois state representative Laura Faver Dias, showing her sharp and thoughtful nature even amid her struggles.
