New ₹5.67 Crore Buildings for EVM Storage Ready Before 2026 Assembly Polls
February 16, 2026
Ahead of the 2026 Assembly election, work has begun to build permanent storage facilities for electronic voting machines (EVMs) and voter verifiable paper audit trail (VVPAT) units in Ranipet and Tirupattur districts. The Public Works Department (PWD) is handling the project, funded by the Election Commission of India (ECI). Since 2019, EVMs and VVPATs have been stored in a worn-out Department of Agriculture building after these districts split from Vellore.
"The new facility will have two-tier security arrangements with round-the-clock surveillance, including CCTV cameras. The facility will be ready in the next few months," said S. Thirupurasundari, Executive Engineer, PWD Ranipet.
Ministers E.V. Velu and R. Gandhi laid the foundation stones for the buildings in Tirupattur and Ranipet, with Collectors K. Sivasoundaravalli and J. U. Chandrakala also present.
Each building will cover 8,000 sq.ft and cost ₹5.67 crore. They will include secure rooms for EVMs-VVPATs, separate quarters for police personnel including women constables, centralized CCTV monitoring linked to the Collector and Superintendent of Police chambers, washrooms, and water taps.
Currently, Tirupattur district has four assembly constituencies: Tirupattur, Jolarpet, Vaniyambadi, and Ambur. Ranipet district has four: Arakkonam, Ranipet, Arcot, and Sholinghur. Together, these districts have about 12 lakh voters.
