Hong Kong Celebrates Year of the Horse with Fireworks, Parades, and Races from Feb 17
February 16, 2026
Hong Kong will celebrate the Year of the Horse with a series of events beginning February 17. Around 1.43 million mainland Chinese visitors are expected during this festive period. The mainland’s holiday runs from February 15 to 23, while Hong Kong’s local holiday is from February 17 to 19. The main celebrations start with the Cathay International Chinese New Year Night Parade at 8pm on February 17 in Tsim Sha Tsui. The parade will have local and international performers and 12 decorated floats, including three shining horses from the Hong Kong Jockey Club. About 100,000 people are expected to watch the parade that moves through Canton Road, Haiphong Road, and Nathan Road. Street performances will also take place from 6pm, creating a carnival atmosphere. On February 18 at 8pm, a 23-minute fireworks show will light up Victoria Harbour. Golden ingots and dragon egg shapes will feature in the display, symbolizing wealth and energy. Best viewing spots include Tsim Sha Tsui Promenade and Central Harbourfront. Police will manage crowds and close nearby roads, so early arrival is advised. The Sha Tin Racecourse will host a special horse race day on February 19. This year’s events will include traditional lion dances and visits from the God of Fortune. Cantopop singer Kelly Chen Wai-lam, hip-hop duo FAMA, and feng shui master Mak Ling-ling will perform at a variety show. Visitors can also enjoy festive food and take photos at Lunar New Year blessing spots. Football fans can catch the Chinese New Year Cup on February 21 at Hong Kong Stadium in Causeway Bay. The Hong Kong team will face South Korea’s FC Seoul at 3pm. To manage the large crowds, the Transport Department will provide overnight MTR services on Lunar New Year’s Eve and create pedestrian zones during parade and fireworks nights. Star Ferry services will pause during the fireworks. On race day, free shuttle buses will run from Wong Tai Sin, Che Kung Temple, and Lam Tsuen Wishing Tree to Sha Tin Racecourse between 10am and 3pm. Rail services have been increased since February 14 and will continue until February 23.
