Presidents Day 2026: US Government, Banks Closed on February 16
February 16, 2026
Americans enjoyed an extra day off on Presidents Day 2026, observed on Monday, February 16. This federal holiday originally celebrated George Washington's birthday but now honors all US presidents. Established in 1879, Presidents Day is officially titled "Washington's Birthday." Government offices and US Postal Service locations were closed, with no mail delivered on February 16. Major banks like Capital One, Bank of America, Wells Fargo, PNC, Chase, Truist, and Citibank also closed, as did the stock market. Some retailers, grocery stores, and pharmacies may have had limited hours, so shoppers were advised to check local times. The holiday date was set by the Uniform Holidays Act of 1968, moving the celebration to the third Monday in February to create longer weekends. President Lyndon B. Johnson signed this act to help Americans travel and enjoy more of the country. Presidents Day combines the celebrations of George Washington’s February 22 birthday and Abraham Lincoln’s on February 12, honoring all US presidents though the official name remains "Washington's Birthday."
