Israel Approves Registering Large West Bank Lands as State Property Amid Rising Violence
February 16, 2026
The Israeli government has approved a plan to register large areas of the occupied West Bank as "state property" for the first time since 1967. This move is seen as a violation of international law, which does not allow an occupying power to confiscate land in occupied territories. The decision was announced as Israeli forces killed at least 12 Palestinians in less than 24 hours.
The proposal was backed by Israel’s Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich, Justice Minister Yariv Levin, and Defence Minister Israel Katz. Smotrich said, "We are continuing the settlement revolution to control all our lands." Katz described the plan as essential for security and governance.
The Palestinian Presidency called the move a "serious escalation," saying it undermines past agreements and UN Security Council resolutions. Hamas condemned the action, calling it an attempt "to steal and Judaise lands" and called the decision "null and void." They said it violated international law and UN resolutions.
Analysts warn this move is a form of de facto annexation that removes legal barriers to expanding illegal Israeli settlements in the West Bank. Political analyst Xavier Abu Eid said, "People should understand this is not just a step towards annexation, we are experiencing annexation as we speak today."
Meanwhile, violence continues despite a US-brokered truce. Israeli strikes killed at least 12 people in Gaza in one day. The civil defence agency reported attacks on a tent shelter for displaced people in Jabalia and strikes in Khan Yunis, Gaza City, and north Gaza. Osama Abu Askar, who lost his nephew in the Jabalia attack, said, "Israel doesn’t understand ceasefires or truces."
Since the truce began, Gaza’s health ministry reports at least 601 Palestinians have died. Israel claims at least four of its soldiers were killed in this period.
