The body of Lavanya Pratap, a 21-year-old second-year MBBS student from Patna, Bihar, was found in a hostel toilet at a private medical college in Durgapur, West Bengal. Police said the body was discovered on Saturday night, February 14, 2026. Lavanya was pursuing her MBBS degree at the institute. "Preliminary investigation indicates that the death may have been a suicide," a police officer said. The exact cause will be confirmed after a post-mortem examination. The student’s family has been informed and has arrived in Durgapur. Police have questioned classmates and hostel inmates during the investigation. Reports suggest Lavanya had failed one subject in the recent semester exams and was under mental stress. In a related note, a student from the same college was allegedly gang-raped last October.
