Offshore Survey Near Kozhikode Spots 20 Seabird Species and Raises Plastic Pollution Alarm
February 16, 2026
A recent offshore pelagic survey near Chombala harbour in Kozhikode district recorded sightings of about 20 seabird species, including three rarely seen ones. The survey, held after 15 years, involved a fibre boat traveling over 50 nautical miles. The team was led by Chief Forest Social Conservator R. Keerthi, Divisional Forest Officer K. Neethu, and Range Officer Akhil Narayanan, along with birdwatchers from the Malabar Natural History Society.
The birds spotted included Pomarine Jaeger, White-cheeked Tern, Common Tern, Lesser Black-backed Gull, and Whiskered Tern. Despite some team members experiencing seasickness, the survey was completed successfully with all precautions. Senior birdwatcher Sathyan Meppayur explained the characteristics of the birds to the group.
Besides documenting the birds, the team observed alarming levels of plastic waste floating in the sea. They warned that discarded plastic debris is causing serious environmental pollution and called for stronger action to tackle the problem.
