Indian-origin man jailed 5 months in Singapore for molesting woman

An Indian-origin man was sentenced to five months in jail in Singapore for touching a woman inappropriately. The 42-year-old, Om Kumar Rai, pleaded guilty and was sentenced on Friday.
The court heard that on June 17, 2025, Rai approached a 22-year-old woman early in the morning. He claimed to be her father’s workmate and tried to start a conversation. Rai then extended his hand. “Instead of returning the handshake, the accused held onto the victim’s right hand and kissed the back of her right hand once,” said Deputy Public Prosecutors Tay Jia En and Ng Xin Yu. Rai repeated this twice.
When the woman tried to pull her hand away the second time, Rai did not let go. He led her to the foot of a staircase landing and molested her. The woman fought back, pushed Rai away, and left for home. She told her parents, who reported the incident to police that morning.
The prosecutors called Rai’s actions “undoubtedly intrusive” and asked for five to six months in jail. Singapore law states that sexual assault with intent to outrage modesty can lead to up to three years in jail, fines, caning, or all combined.
Court documents hid the victim’s name and the place of the incident. Rai admitted pretending to be the woman’s father’s colleague and luring her to a quiet spot before molesting her.
