Swiss Train Derails Near Goppenstein, Five Injured Amid Avalanche Risk
February 16, 2026
A regional commuter train derailed near the village of Goppenstein, southern Switzerland, early morning in heavy snow. The incident, likely caused by an avalanche crossing the tracks, injured five people, with one sent to hospital. Police confirmed all 29 passengers were rescued. "According to initial findings, an avalanche may have crossed the tracks shortly before the train passed," police said. The derailment happened at 07:00 local time near where the train was exiting the Lotschberg rail tunnel. The area is under level four avalanche warning, the second highest level. Switzerland has faced heavy rain and snow recently, boosting avalanche risk across the Alps. Authorities evacuated 50 people from nearby Orsieres village. Skiers and hikers are urged to follow safety guidelines and check avalanche bulletins before venturing out. Last month, a German man was killed in an avalanche while skiing in the Swiss Alps.
