Bangladesh MPs and Constitution Reform Commission to be Sworn In on Feb 17, 2026
February 17, 2026
The Election Commission of Bangladesh announced that new members of Parliament will be sworn in on Tuesday, February 17, 2026, at 10 a.m. Alongside them, members of the “Constitution Reform Commission” will also take their oath. Later that day, the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) Chairman Tarique Rahman and his Cabinet will be sworn in. About 1,200 local and foreign guests will attend the swearing-in ceremony in the afternoon, according to BNP's media wing.
Many newly elected MPs were surprised by the announcement as they had not been informed about the Constitution Reform Commission's oath. It is reported that the entire parliament will act as the Constitution Reform Commission for 180 days following a referendum held on February 12, 2026, which passed with a majority 'yes' vote. All MPs will be sworn in as members of this commission as well.
There is some discomfort among MPs, especially from BNP, regarding how the commission’s work will align with their regular parliamentary duties.
Distinguished international guests have confirmed attendance. They include Bhutan’s Prime Minister Tshering Tobgay, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, Pakistan’s Planning Minister Ahsan Iqbal, Nepal’s interim Foreign Minister Bala Nanda Sharma, and Sri Lanka’s Health Minister Nalinda Jayatissa. Other countries such as Qatar, Malaysia, Brunei, the United Kingdom, and the Maldives will also be represented by high-level delegates. Many diplomatic mission heads based in Dhaka will join the event held at Bangladesh’s parliament building, Jatiyo Sansad.
This swearing-in ends the interim government led by Chief Adviser Mohammed Yunus, who took charge on August 8, 2024, after the fall of Sheikh Hasina’s Awami League government. On February 16, 2026, Prof. Yunus delivered a farewell speech on state TV praising the election as marking "the beginning of new Bangladesh." He highlighted reforms, including that the police no longer torture the public, and stressed the need to prevent fascism from rising again.
One of the interim government’s major achievements was drafting the July Charter, adopted by many political parties on October 17, 2017. The National Citizen Party of the opposition alliance signed the Charter only on February 16. Prof. Yunus urged all parties to support and adopt the July Charter, emphasizing its popularity in the recent referendum.
