February 17, 2026
Two people from a family have died, and others are sick, after eating seafood at a restaurant in Vizhinjam, Kerala. The victims are Shaji (42) and his mother-in-law, Rasheeda Beevi (58), both from Nilamel in Kollam district. Shaji's wife is in hospital, first at Kollam Government Medical College, then moved to a hospital in Thiruvananthapuram. The family of six had dinner late on February 16, 2026, at this restaurant. Four out of six fell sick soon after the meal and were admitted to hospitals in Thiruvananthapuram and Kollam. One person died at Thiruvananthapuram Medical College Hospital and another at Kollam Medical College Hospital. Authorities say they will confirm the cause of death—whether food poisoning or allergic reactions—after thorough investigations. The restaurant is popular among seafood lovers and served many customers that day. Police have shut down the restaurant, suspecting food poisoning. The food safety team will collect samples and investigate further.
