PESHAWAR: The Peshawar High Court (PHC) on Tuesday ordered the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) government and police to reopen several roads blocked by PTI supporters for four days. The protesters have been demanding hospital treatment for jailed party founder Imran Khan. A bench led by Justice Ijaz Anwar took up petitions by various citizens and summoned top KP officials, including Inspector General Zulfiqar Hameed. The KP IG said 14 points were initially blocked, now six remain closed. Justice Anwar asked, “Isn’t blocking roads illegal?” He noted lawyers could not reach the court from Islamabad and stressed citizens’ right to move freely. The judge also pointed to the poor traffic conditions in Peshawar, calling it the worst in the country. KP police are working to fix it by starting e-challans, said IG Hameed. Justice Anwar criticized the protests, saying, “It is unfortunate that the ruling party here is protesting and hurting the province’s people.” He refused a request to delay action and ordered all roads to open immediately. “The entire country is open, but Khyber Pakhtunkhwa is shut. This is against our own people,” he said. The blocked roads include the Peshawar-Islamabad Motorway (M-1), GT Road at Khairabad, and key routes across the province. The court demanded reports from the KP IG and chief secretary by tomorrow and put the hearing on hold until Wednesday. The M-1 closure strained GT Road, which also suffers PTI blockades, causing huge problems for travelers, businesses, and emergency needs. Businessmen reported supplies stuck on roads due to the protests.
