Jakarta and satellite cities, called Jabodetabek, house 42 million people. Together, they produce about 14,000 tonnes of rubbish every day. This huge amount of waste puts heavy pressure on the eight landfill sites serving the area. Reports say these landfills are nearly full or already full. At a busy market in South Jakarta, vendor Nurhasanah shared how the garbage near her coffee and snack stall hurts her business. She said, "The smell is awful, very pungent. It is also unpleasant to look at. It looks filthy." The growing waste problem threatens health and hygiene in the capital.
