Meghalaya has deported 194 Bangladeshi nationals from a total of 658 prosecuted for illegal entry since 2021. Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong shared the update on February 17, 2026, in the 60-member Assembly. "The 194 were deported after they completed their sentences, and travel permits were secured from the Bangladeshi authorities," he said. Action targets those who entered Meghalaya illegally between 2021 and February 3, 2026, under proper legal provisions. Meghalaya has put in place a "multi-layered mechanism" to control infiltration. This includes 18 check posts, entry gates, and a land customs station along key border points with Assam and Bangladesh. The state shares a 443-km-long border with Bangladesh, with 76 km still unfenced. A state-level monitoring committee tracks anti-infiltration efforts. Laws used include the Meghalaya Resident Safety and Security Act of 2016, the Immigration and Foreigners’ Act of 2025, and the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. The measures aim to strengthen security and stop illegal migration in the sensitive northeastern region.
