Cow Rescued from Open Sump in Kilpauk by Police and Locals
February 17, 2026
A cow fell into an unused sump on a vacant plot in Kilpauk’s Secretariat Colony on February 17, 2026. A resident spotted the animal from his balcony and alerted neighbours. The locals called the G5 police station and the Kilpauk fire station for help. The sump was covered with flex boards that likely gave way under the cow’s weight. Residents said the cow might have entered the plot to feed on shrubs. Martin, an auto driver, warned that such open sumps are "death traps" and urged authorities to seal them immediately. People gathered at the site, feeding the cow banana leaves and lowering a ladder hoping it could climb out. Fire and police personnel arrived, tied ropes around the cow’s neck and legs, and pulled it out safely. The sump was then covered with a concrete slab, and police asked locals to stay clear. Attempts to find the cow’s owner failed, but the unharmed animal calmly walked away. The rescue showed strong community spirit and fast official response.
