Tuscany Monks Told to Avoid Social Media and Streaming in Sacred Spaces
February 17, 2026
Father Matteo Ferrari, prior of the Camaldolese monastery in Tuscany, has told monks to avoid social media and streaming services like Netflix. He said monks’ rooms are sacred for prayer, ‘‘not for Netflix or other platforms.’’ Ferrari, 51, warned these digital tools ‘‘are specifically designed to create addiction’’ and ‘‘should absolutely be avoided.’’ In a long letter on Facebook, he said social media such as Instagram and TikTok challenge religious life. ‘‘We cannot pretend this challenge doesn’t exist,’’ he wrote.
The Camaldoli hermitage, set in a national park and founded in the 11th century, houses nine monks. Their main work is prayer and sacred reading. Ferrari said using their rooms for watching films risks turning them into cinemas and questioned, ‘‘where does our monastic and Romualdine spirituality end up?’’ He warned about ‘‘cinephile addictions’’ leading monks to focus on movies instead of seeking God. Ferrari said it would be ‘‘much healthier’’ for monks to reflect on community life during their alone time.
In an interview with La Nazione newspaper, Ferrari said his aim was to invite monks to think deeply about a modern issue affecting everyone. In 2022, late Pope Francis also warned about digital dangers. He urged seminarians to use social media positively but cautioned about temptations like digital pornography. ‘‘It is a vice that so many people have... Also priests and nuns,’’ the Pope said.
