Australia set a new record for renewable energy added to its electricity grid in the last quarter of 2025. A huge 2.1GW of new wind and solar farms came online from October to December. This amount can power Brisbane one and a half times over. This beats the previous record of 1.3GW added in the third quarter of 2021. The Clean Energy Council reported that four new utility-scale batteries totaling 1GW/2.3GWh were also installed. This triples the battery capacity added in the previous quarter. The largest battery was the Melbourne renewable energy hub in Victoria, with 600MW and 1,600MWh capacity. Jackie Trad, CEO of the Clean Energy Council, said the achievement was an “Aussie first” and came as renewable energy supplied more than half of the grid's electricity for the first time. Overall, 63% of the renewable energy capacity added in 2025 was installed in the last quarter. The year ended with 3.3GW of new renewable energy capacity, making 2025 the second-biggest year for renewable projects since 2021. More battery storage was added in 2025 than in the previous eight years combined. The surge at year-end was helped by a push to complete projects before 2026 and political stability in the year's second half. However, experts say more work is needed to speed up investments in large-scale clean energy generation.
