US Forces Launch Deadly Strikes on Three Drug-Smuggling Boats, Killing 11
February 18, 2026
US military officials said American forces attacked three boats accused of drug-smuggling on Monday. Eleven people were killed in these strikes, marking one of the deadliest days in President Donald Trump's campaign against "narco-terrorists". Since September, US strikes have caused 145 deaths and targeted 42 boats along drug routes in the Caribbean Sea and eastern Pacific Ocean, the Associated Press reported.
US Southern Command shared videos of the attacks on social media but did not provide clear evidence the boats carried traffickers. They said, "Intelligence confirmed the vessels were transiting along known narco-trafficking routes and were engaged in narco-trafficking operations."
The strikes killed four men on one boat in the eastern Pacific, four on another boat also in the eastern Pacific, and three men on a vessel in the Caribbean. The US Southern Command confirmed, "No US military forces were harmed."
Last week, the US Southern Command conducted two other deadly strikes with similar claims. Legal experts have raised concerns. A report by the Washington Office on Latin America said, "Those being killed by US military strikes at sea are denied any due process whatsoever." They also accused the Trump administration of "asserting and exercising an apparently unlimited license to kill people that the president deems to be terrorists."
These strikes occurred weeks after US forces captured Venezuela's President Nicolás Maduro to face trial in New York for drug, weapons, and narco-terrorism charges. The Trump administration calls these actions part of a fight against narco-terrorism, though evidence linking Maduro to drug trafficking is scarce.
The Pentagon had deployed over a dozen warships near Venezuela to block drug trafficking and illegal oil trade. Many ships were later sent east amid US military threats toward Iran over its nuclear program, the Washington Post reported.
