China and South Korea are turning a new leaf by focusing on a shared struggle: their rapidly ageing societies. Despite recent tensions and competition in technology sectors, the two countries are now cooperating closely. Their leaders, President Xi Jinping and South Korean President Lee Jae Myung, recently met several times to discuss these demographic challenges. Following a summit in November during the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (Apec) meeting, both nations signed a cooperation agreement on the "silver economy." President Xi said they aim for "mutually beneficial outcomes." According to Xu Tianchen, senior economist at the Economist Intelligence Unit, "First, it’s definitely one of the least sensitive areas of cooperation in China-Korea relations, and second, it’s a 100 per cent growing market in both countries." This move highlights a new chapter where economic ties grow stronger through shared social concerns.
