Indian University Denies Building Chinese Robot Dog Amid AI Summit Controversy
February 18, 2026
An Indian professor falsely said that a Chinese-made robot dog shown at the AI Impact Summit in New Delhi was developed by her university. The robot dog is a silver mechanical model sold by Chinese start-up Unitree. It was displayed at the booth of private Galgotias University. The professor told an Indian TV reporter, "You need to meet Orion. This has been developed by the centres of excellence at Galgotias University." She added, "As you can see, it can take all shapes and sizes … it’s quite naughty also." This sparked online backlash and was called "embarrassing" by politicians. After the uproar, Galgotias University posted on social media, "Let us be clear – Galgotias has not built this robodog, neither have we claimed." The university said, "what we are building are minds that will soon design, engineer, and manufacture such technologies." They clarified they did not create or sell the Chinese robot dog. The incident highlights the risks of exaggerating technology claims at big events.
