Ponnyathankam 2026 Lights Up Kannur with Kalaripayattu and Culture
February 18, 2026
Kannur’s Ponnyam buzzes with the sounds of Urumi blades and the fierce energy of Kalaripayattu at the 11th Ponnyathankam festival. Held at historic Ezharakkandam, this week-long event brightens the region with martial valour and cultural joy. Since 2015, it has grown from a small Kalari demo into a major martial arts gathering. This year, 24 Kalari groups, including teams from Delhi, Dubai, and Manipur's Meitei community, take part. Each evening features powerful leaps, weapon displays, and synchronised combat from northern and southern traditions. Alongside these fiery shows, folk arts like Thiruvathirakali, Kolkali, and Duff Muttu captivate the crowd. Famous singers such as Vidhu Prathap and Ramya Nambeesan light up the stage too. A new QR code registration offers visitors instant videos and photos about the festival and nearby heritage sites. Assembly Speaker A. N. Shamseer opened the festival, praising its global rise and plans for a new Kalari Academy in Ponnyam. The flag-hoisting was done by Deputy Inspector General Yathish Chandra, with Kathirur panchayat president P.P. Sujaya presiding. Ponnyathankam is truly a fierce and festive spectacle fusing sport, tradition, and culture under one vibrant roof.
