22-Year-Old Sikh Nurse Brutally Assaulted in Racist Attack Outside Geelong Gym
February 19, 2026
A 22-year-old Sikh nurse, Harmanpreet Singh, suffered a brutal racial assault outside a gym in Corio, Geelong, Australia. The attack happened late Tuesday after he finished working out. Singh said three men waited for him outside the gym. One of them headbutted Singh in the face, breaking his nose. "He got really close to my face and then just got really back and hit his head on my nose. And just started bleeding straight away," Singh told Australian broadcaster 9News.
Before the attack, the men shouted racial slurs. Video shows one man yelling, “Wanna mouth off, you Indian dog?” Singh was also told to “go back to where you came from.” The attackers fled the scene quickly in a sedan, leaving Singh bleeding badly. He was taken to the hospital and spent the night under care. Doctors said he might need specialist help and surgery.
"Nobody wants to hear it… especially when you're just minding your own business," Singh said. "Anyone would be hurt. I'm still traumatised."
Singh said this was not his first racist abuse but called this event deeply upsetting. He is now afraid to return to the gym. "I don't know if I'm going to go back to the gym… I'm not going to feel safe after this," he said.
This attack highlights wider worries about rising racist violence against Indians in Australia. The Indian community has over 840,000 people as of mid-2023. In July 2025, another Indian student, Amanpreet Singh, was badly beaten in Adelaide by five men with metal weapons. There have also been vandal attacks on Indian places of worship, such as the Shree Swaminarayan Hindu temple in Melbourne.
Community members link these hate crimes to anti-immigration protests from last year. The incidents raise serious concerns about migrant safety in Australia.
