Academic and outpatient services at Government Medical College Hospital (MCH), Kozhikode, were badly disrupted on Wednesday. The Kerala Government Medical College Teachers’ Association (KGMCTA) strike entered its third day. Doctors announced a boycott of all surgeries except emergency cases starting Thursday. The Kerala Medical Post Graduates Association (KMPGA) declared a token strike on the same day. Most senior doctors stayed away from the outpatient department on Wednesday. Postgraduate students and house surgeons took care of the patients. According to a KMPGA release, teachers’ strike raised the workload on resident doctors who managed almost all outpatient and inpatient care. Regular academic sessions were suspended, causing loss of training for students. This increased pressure harmed both medical education and patient care. KMPGA also demanded a stipend hike for postgraduates, opposed non-medical appointees for assistant professor posts through the Kerala Public Service Commission, and called for quick resolution of issues related to senior resident appointments.
