Tony Burke Slams Coalition “Silly Hypocrisy” on IS-Linked Families Returning from Syria
February 19, 2026
Home Affairs Minister Tony Burke called the Coalition's push to bar 34 Australian wives and children of IS fighters from Syria "silly hypocrisy." On ABC’s 7.30 program, Burke said, "If the Coalition wants the group excluded from Australia permanently, they should look at the laws they voted for, they put in place when they were in government." He added, "There's a lot of very silly deeply hypocritical claims coming from the opposition today."
Burke reminded viewers that under the Morrison government, repatriations from Syria took place, including around 40 self-managed returns. "That didn't just include women and children, it included fighters. It included men who had gone there to fight," he said. "The fact that people with Australian passports have returned from those sorts of situations is not new. It happened under them."
Recently, the government announced a two-year ban on one woman from the group entering Australia. Burke revealed she became an Australian citizen under the Howard government and went to Syria under the Abbott government. The ban was issued after reports surfaced that some in the group were leaving their camp to return.
Burke said children returning to Australia would face similar treatment as previous repatriations, but parents might choose not to return as they would "face the full force of the law" if found guilty of crimes.
Meanwhile, New Zealand Foreign Minister Winston Peters criticized the frequent leadership changes in Australian politics, calling it "inexcusable" churn driven by "ego." Peters said the political instability made his diplomatic work harder.
Burke also addressed differing views on the issue, including those of Jamal Rifi, who reports say is helping the group. He confirmed that the Prime Minister's stance on the matter has not changed since before the Bondi terror attack.
