US President Donald Trump has told the UK: "Do not give away Diego Garcia." He criticized the UK’s plan to hand over the Chagos Islands to Mauritius while leasing back the key military base on Diego Garcia. Trump said, "this land should not be taken away from the U.K." and called such a move "a blight on our Great Ally." This message was posted on his social media site, Truth Social. Despite Washington officially supporting London’s plan on Tuesday to cede sovereignty of the British Indian Ocean Territory to Mauritius, Trump warned UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer. He said, "Leases are no good when it comes to Countries, and that he is making a big mistake by entering a 100 Year Lease..." Diego Garcia is the largest island in the Chagos Archipelago and serves as a vital military base used by UK and US forces. Under the plan, the UK will lease the island back for 99 years. Trump highlighted Diego Garcia’s "strategically located in the Indian Ocean" position. He accused Starmer of "losing control of this important Island by claims of entities never known of before." Trump also said, "We will always be ready, willing, and able to fight for the U.K., but they have to remain strong in the face of Wokeism, and other problems put before them." Regarding US-Iran nuclear talks, Trump said: "Should Iran decide not to make a Deal, it may be necessary for the United States to use Diego Garcia... in order to eradicate a potential attack by a highly unstable and dangerous Regime." The Chagos Islands, also called the British Indian Ocean Territory, are about 5,799 miles from the UK and 1,250 miles from Mauritius in the Indian Ocean. The UK has controlled the islands since 1814. Mauritius claims the islands were taken illegally when it gained independence. The upcoming US-Mauritius talks next week are expected to address these issues further.
