Day 1,456 of Russia-Ukraine War: Heavy Attacks and Tough Geneva Talks
February 19, 2026
On February 19, heavy fighting continued in Ukraine's Zaporizhia and Donetsk regions. Russian forces launched multiple attacks killing one and injuring seven in Zaporizhia. Attacks involved 448 drones and 163 artillery strikes, damaging over 136 homes and vehicles. In Donetsk, 173 people, including 135 children, evacuated due to shelling. A 54-year-old man died in a Russian strike in Dnipropetrovsk’s Nikopol district. Vast power outages hit Ukraine, with over 99,000 homes in Odesa region losing electricity. In Russia's Bryansk region, one person died in a Ukrainian drone attack.
Russia claimed it seized villages Kharkivka in Sumy and Krynychne in Zaporizhia. Ukraine reported Russian advances in Nykyforivka, Donetsk. Russia’s Defence Ministry stated it shot down 155 Ukrainian drones and other weapons in 24 hours.
In Geneva, Russia and Ukraine ended the second day of US-mediated talks. Both sides called the negotiations "difficult." Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said, "progress has been made … for now, positions differ because the negotiations were difficult." Zelenskyy told Piers Morgan Uncensored that the sides neared agreement on ceasefire monitoring but struggled on political issues, especially territory control. A White House spokeswoman said there was "meaningful progress made" with plans for more talks soon. Russian negotiator Vladimir Medinsky described the talks as "difficult but businesslike".
Ukraine imposed sanctions on Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko for supporting Russia's war, including providing relay stations for drone attacks. US Senator Jeanne Shaheen and three Democrats visited Kyiv, urging stronger efforts against Putin.
Estonian Foreign Minister Margus Tsahkna called allowing Russian and Belarusian athletes to compete in the Milano-Cortina Paralympics "a disgrace" while the war continues. Estonia's public broadcaster Eesti Rahvusringhaaling announced it would not broadcast the games in protest.
