Musk Cuts Russian Starlink Access, Boosting Ukraine's Edge at War Front
February 19, 2026
Elon Musk’s SpaceX has stopped Russian forces from using Starlink satellite internet since February 1. This move weakens Russia’s attacks and helps Ukraine fight better. Ukrainian sources say Russian troops lost about half their offensive strength due to poor communication. A Ukrainian drone operator named Giovanni said, "The Russians… lost their ability to control the field. I think they lost 50% of their capacity for offence."
Earlier, Russian forces used Starlink to guide accurate drone strikes. However, after Ukraine's defense minister, Mykhailo Fedorov, requested the block, SpaceX limited Starlink use to approved Ukrainian users only.
Ukrainian volunteers ran a phishing scam to trick Russian soldiers into revealing their Starlink terminal locations. This allowed Ukraine to target many Russian internet points with artillery and drone strikes. InformNapalm, the volunteer group, identified 2,425 Russian terminals and exposed attempts by Russian troops to bribe collaborators for registrations.
The Ukrainian Security Service warned against collaborating with Russia, calling it high treason. Russian soldiers now distrust each other, reducing morale. Russian troops have switched to slower, easily jammed radio and wired communications. Ukrainian soldiers say this has made enemy actions easier to track.
Military analysts note Russian drone attacks far behind the front line have dropped sharply. Serhii Kuzan of the Ukrainian Security and Co-operation Centre said, "Russian drone operators used to control and directly strike selected targets 100-250 kilometres from the front line. Now they no longer have this capability."
Ukraine’s military intelligence released intercepted Russian communications, with soldiers complaining about poor domestic alternatives to Starlink. One soldier called the 'Gazprom' terminal "just total crap."
Some Ukrainian soldiers caution the situation isn’t fully clear yet. Russian officials claim losing Starlink did not hurt their operations, calling its use "primarily to mislead the enemy."
Ukrainian forces aim to use this window to clear contested areas dubbed the "grey zone." Vlad Voloshyn of Ukraine’s Southern Command said, "We didn’t let the enemy entrench in the grey zone and we stopped their storm groups."
Former Ukrainian intelligence officer Ivan Stupak believes Ukraine has a few months to make gains. "The Russian armoured forces on the ground are partly blind and partly deaf," he said. Even small counter-attacks now could match 2022’s successes. Gains would also strengthen Ukraine's position for future talks.
The full impact remains uncertain, but Musk’s Starlink cut has clearly shifted the balance on Ukraine’s battlefront — at least for now.
