White House Says Iran Would Be 'Very Wise' to Make Deal as US Boosts Military Near Tehran
February 19, 2026
The White House said Iran would be "very wise" to make a deal with the US. This comes as reports say President Donald Trump may order new military action against Iran. Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said Trump hopes for a peaceful solution over Iran's nuclear program. The US has sent a second battleship to the region. This is one day after talks in Switzerland showed some progress. US media said Trump discussed attack plans with advisers, and a strike could happen as soon as Saturday. Last summer, the US struck three Iranian nuclear sites. CBS reported US security officials are ready for possible strikes soon. Trump has not decided yet and talks are ongoing. Leavitt said, "There are many reasons and arguments that one could make for a strike against Iran." She added, "Iran would be very wise to make a deal with President Trump and with his administration." On the Geneva talks, she said Washington and Tehran are still "far apart" on key issues. "A little bit of progress" was made, but details are awaited from Iran soon, she said. Leavitt did not say if Israel would join any US decision. The US is increasing its military forces near Iran. Satellite images confirm the USS Abraham Lincoln aircraft carrier, with guided missile destroyers and fighter jets, is close to Iran. The USS Gerald R Ford, the world's largest warship, is also on the way and expected in three weeks. All US forces should be in place by mid-March. Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei posted an AI image on X showing the Ford at the bottom of the sea. He said, "More dangerous than that warship is the weapon that can send that warship to the bottom of the sea." Khamenei also called US attempts to shape negotiation outcomes "wrong and foolish." Iran showed its own strength with a naval drill in the strategic Strait of Hormuz. This vital waterway is key for oil exports from Gulf countries.
