The drama just spiked as US President Donald Trump has commanded troops to storm the city of Portland, Oregon, aiming to protect immigration detention centres — and he’s not holding back. In a bold post on Truth Social, Trump said, “At the request of Secretary of Homeland Security, Kristi Noem, I am directing Secretary of War, Pete Hegseth, to provide all necessary Troops to protect War ravaged Portland, and any of our ICE Facilities under siege from attack by Antifa, and other domestic terrorists.” He added, “I am also authorizing Full Force, if necessary.” That’s some serious muscle being flexed! Why this heavy-handed step? Trump faces protests targeting ICE (Immigration and Customs Enforcement) facilities in Portland. The president claims the city is under siege by Antifa and other groups he labels as domestic terrorists. He’s even called Portland “war ravaged,” painting a fiery picture of chaos. But Portland’s leaders beg to differ. Oregon Governor Tina Kotek slammed the move as an "abuse of power." At a calm press conference, she said, “There is no national security threat in Portland. Our communities are safe and calm.” She also told Trump directly, “Portland is doing just fine.” Standing alongside city leaders and businesspeople near the waterfront, Kotek assured everyone, “Our city is a far cry from the war-ravaged community that he has posted about on social media.” Governor Kotek isn’t alone. Senator Ron Wyden (D-Ore.) warned troops might be trying to spark conflicts just like they did back in 2020. “Portland is a peaceful, vibrant city with no need for federal agents on our streets,” Wyden said. He urged locals, “I urge Oregonians not to fall into Trump’s attempt to incite violence.” Portland’s own Mayor Keith Wilson voiced frustration with federal moves. “We need federal help to renew our infrastructure, build affordable housing, clean our rivers, and plant trees. Instead, they’re sending armored vehicles and masked men,” he said. “If the federal government didn’t come to lend us a hand, then take a hike.” He also made it clear that while Portland welcomes help, it won’t tolerate anyone trying to harm its people or homes. To add fuel to the fire, Trump recently labeled Antifa a domestic terrorist organization, giving the government broad powers to investigate and act against the group. What remains unclear is the scale and kind of troop deployment. Trump’s order didn’t specify if these troops are National Guard or regular military, nor explained what “full force” really means.
