Sad news from the sports world! Nick Mangold, a New York Jets legend and seven-time Pro Bowler, passed away on Saturday night at just 41 years old. The former star center had been fighting a tough kidney illness that needed a transplant to save his life. Unfortunately, complications from this serious disease took him away too soon. Mangold was open with his fans about his health struggles. On October 14, he posted a heartfelt message on social media explaining, “This isn’t an easy message to share, but I want to be open about what’s been happening with me and my health. In 2006, I was diagnosed with a genetic defect that has led to chronic kidney disease. After a rough summer, I'm undergoing dialysis as we look for a kidney transplant.” He added that doctors expected his condition to worsen but not this early. Sadly, none of his family members could donate a kidney to help him. So, he courageously reached out to the Jets and Ohio State Buckeyes communities for a possible donor with type O blood. “I am deeply grateful to anyone that would consider donating,” Mangold wrote. Apart from his health battle, Mangold expressed deep love and thanks to his family and friends who stood by him like a rock. He called his support system “amazing” and said he remained hopeful and strong despite the difficult fight. Nick Mangold’s Football Legacy is just as impressive. Drafted by the Jets in 2006, he played an incredible 171 games and had long injury-free streaks of 89 and 59 games. He was honored with two first-team All-Pro selections, one second-team All-Pro, seven Pro Bowls, and his seven Pro Bowl appearances are just one shy of Jets Hall of Famer Winston Hill’s record. Fans remembered Mangold as a powerful player and a brave, open person who fought his illness with courage. The NFL community continues to mourn but celebrates his inspiring life and spirit.
