Tiruchi’s ₹186 Crore Uyyakondan Canal Bund Road to Beat Traffic Jams and Boost City Links!

November 1, 2025

Hold on tight, Tiruchi! The Water Resources Department (WRD) is gearing up to build a spanking new road along the scenic Uyyakondan river bank. Stretching from the bustling M.G.R. Statue Junction to Sunnambukaranpatti, this road is designed to bust the notorious traffic jams on the overcrowded Vayalur Road – a headache street that has been bursting at the seams with too many vehicles. Originally, the highways folks were supposed to handle the job, crafting the detailed project report. But plans changed! Now, the WRD, which rules the river bunds, is steering the wheel. This exciting project was rolled out by Chief Minister M.K. Stalin back in 2021 and promises to serve as a slick alternative route not just for Vayalur Road but also for important district roads MDR-461 (Tiruchi-Kuzhumani-Jeeyapuram) and MDR-12 (Allithurai-Thogamalai). So, what’s cooking? A brand-new TWO-lane road, 7.5 metres wide, ready to rock Tiruchi’s transport scene with a budget of ₹186 crore. But wait, ₹65 crore alone is set aside to grab around 40,000 square meters of land near the river bund. This strategic land acquisition is crucial to squeezing the road smoothly along the Uyyakondan Canal’s edge. The road won’t just sit flat – it will soar! Especially when it crosses the iconic Puthur Weir and aqueduct where three rivers — Uyyakondan, Koraiyar, and Kudamuritti — meet near the Kuzhumayi Amman Temple. There, an elevated road structure will impress, along with a high-level rotary that will connect seamlessly to a new inner link road running along the Koraiyar bund, rolling from Panjapur near the Integrated Bus Stand right up to the Karur Highway. This is a big deal for city folks longing for relief from the narrow, jam-packed Vayalur Main Road, which struggled hard to keep pace with Tiruchi’s rapid growth and urban sprawl. According to sources, the official green light or 'administrative sanction' is awaited. Once it arrives, work will start to transform travel in Tiruchi forever! So, get ready to wave goodbye to long traffic snarls and say hello to smooth drives on the shiny new Uyyakondan Canal Bund Road, a true traffic-busting marvel for Tiruchi’s future!
