Central Railway Fires Back: Calls GRP’s Mumbra Train Death Probe 'Technically Flawed and Wrong'

November 5, 2025

Mumbai's rail drama heats up! Just days after an FIR pointed fingers at two senior Central Railway (CR) officials for negligence in the June 9 Mumbra train tragedy, CR has struck back hard. They called the GRP's (Government Railway Police) investigation “technically flawed and based on wrong presumptions.” What’s cooking? The GRP hired experts from Veermata Jijabai Technological Institute (VJTI) to find out why the accident happened. But CR officials say VJTI's specialty is civil structures like buildings and bridges — not railway track engineering. "VJTI's core domain is in civil structures, such as buildings and bridges, not railway track engineering," said a CR official. The officials also pointed out that the inquiry started weeks after the mishap, when the site itself had changed. So, is the blame on tracks fair? CR says no way! The FIR suggested that unwelded or single tracks made the train sway, leading to passengers falling down. But CR rejected this, explaining, "Neither of these factors can cause swaying. If such conditions existed, it would result in derailment, not passengers falling." The officials also turned down GRP's idea that flooding washed away the track ballast and messed up the alignment. According to CR, no track problem was reported before the accident. Also, the slow-down caution order of 30 km/h came four days after the accident, not earlier. The battle over blame rages on as everyone seeks the truth behind those tragic deaths at Mumbra.
