The calm atmosphere of a voter verification camp in Kasaragod, Kerala, was shattered on Thursday when a political storm erupted! The police arrested A. Surendran, a fiery local secretary of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) and member of Delampady panchayat’s 8th ward, for allegedly attacking a booth level officer (BLO). The drama unfolded at Payaradukka ward (Booth no. 78) during a Special Intensive Revision camp, where forms for electoral rolls were being filled. P. Ajith, an LD clerk acting as the BLO, gave a voter verification form to a neighbour after the actual voter was not home. The instruction was clear – the neighbour would pass the form when the voter returned. But trouble brewed when Mr. Surendran loudly objected, accusing the BLO of not handing the form directly to the voter. When asked to explain his objection, things took a violent turn. According to the complaint filed by Mr. Ajith, Mr. Surendran attacked him right there during the camp. The Adhur police acted swiftly. They registered a case under Sections 132 and 296(B) of the BNS based on the complaint and took Mr. Surendran into custody on Friday. This incident has sent ripples, raising questions about the tension and politics surrounding voter verification exercises. As the investigation continues, this spicy episode reminds us how even simple tasks like filling voter forms can become battlegrounds in Kerala's charged political scene.
