Big news from Panjab University! Vice President C P Radhakrishnan, who is also the chancellor of Panjab University, has given the thumbs-up for the university’s senate election schedule. The election will be held from September 7 to October 4, 2026, according to an official communication from the Vice President’s office. The announcement came after nearly a month of fierce and loud protests by students. These young warriors were demanding the election schedule because the senate polls haven't happened for over a year. When the news arrived, the campus exploded in joy! A note from the Vice President's office said, "I am directed to convey that Hon'ble Vice-President of India and Chancellor Panjab University has approved the schedule of Senate Elections as proposed in the aforementioned letter." This letter was sent to PU Vice Chancellor Renu Vig, who had asked for the schedule’s approval. After the announcement, Vice Chancellor Renu Vig went to the protest site and told students to stop their strike since their main demand was now met. Avtar Singh, leader of the protest group PU Bachao Morcha, shared that the Vice Chancellor officially handed over the approval letter from the Vice President’s Secretariat. He also said, "We will end the dharna on Friday after holding a victory march in the PU." Here’s the election plan: - September 7: Elections for principals and staff - September 14: Professors and associate professors - September 20: Heads and faculty of arts colleges and registered graduate constituency - October 4: Faculty elections This has not just excited students but also drawn cheers from Punjab’s political world. Parties like the Aam Aadmi Party, Shiromani Akali Dal, and various farmers' and religious bodies praised the students’ fight and called it a “victory.” Congress MLA Pargat Singh called it "a victory for the students and the people of Punjab." Union Minister Ravneet Singh Bittu posted on X, "...the long pending matter related to Panjab University Senate elections has been approved by the Honorable Vice President of India." He promised that the BJP and Central Government won’t allow any injustice to Punjab. AAP MP Malvinder Singh Kang hailed the students and people of Punjab for their tough stand, saying, "Heartfelt congratulations to the resilient students, teachers, faculty, and the indomitable people of Punjab who stood unbreakable in the face of relentless adversity. Better late than never — justice has finally prevailed." Punjab Congress chief Amrinder Singh Raja Warring labeled this a "resounding victory for the students and every Punjabi," and Shiromani Akali Dal president Sukhbir Singh Badal applauded the unity and peaceful struggle of the students, declaring, "Today, democracy stands restored on the sacred soil of Punjab." This whole strong protest began because the Centre wanted to restructure Panjab University's governing bodies — the senate and syndicate. But, bowing to pressure, the Ministry of Education withdrew its October 28 notification on November 7. Still, students kept up the fight until the election schedule was officially declared. So, after all the drama and struggle, Panjab University is finally gearing up for its senate elections in September-October 2026. A true win for democracy and student power!
