The Meghalaya High Court has put a pause, a full status quo, on the proposed demolition of the famous heritage building known as 'Bidhan Bhavan' or 'Roy Villa'. This historical villa has strong roots—it was built before 1923 by none other than Dr. Bidhan Chandra Roy, who later became the Chief Minister of West Bengal. The villa was a cool summer retreat for his family, making it a treasure trove of history and memories. On November 28, 2025, a powerful Division Bench of the High Court, led by Justice Hamarsan Singh Thangkhiew and Justice Biswadeep Bhattacharjee, stepped in. They ordered that no changes be made to the villa until the case is fully examined by the Chief Justice's special PIL (Public Interest Litigation) Bench. "The matter will be placed before the regular PIL Bench, and status quo on the property will be maintained," they said. This legal drama started earlier this month when a PIL was registered after a heartfelt letter reached Chief Justice Soumen Sen. The letter highlighted how important this villa is, both historically and architecturally. Currently, the villa serves as a State Circuit House. During the hearing, the Advocate General spoke up and promised the court that a detailed affidavit would soon arrive. He said the government would carefully check all records tied to the villa's rich past and how it was turned into a Circuit House. Adding to the mix, Amicus Curiae S. Chakrawarty said he would also file an affidavit, but only after studying the detailed records the State plans to submit. So, the story is far from over and the villa's fate hangs in the balance—for now, it's safe! Stay tuned as this heritage battle unfolds, with the High Court batting to preserve a precious piece of history in Meghalaya.
