The Supreme Court agreed on Friday, November 28, 2025, to hear various pleas on December 1. These pleas seek an extension for mandatory registration of all waqf properties under the Unified Waqf Management, Empowerment, Efficiency and Development (UMEED) portal. The All India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB), AIMIM leader Asaduddin Owaisi, and others filed the petitions. A Bench of Justices Dipankar Datta and Augustine George Masih noted urgent submissions from lawyer Fuzail Ahmad Ayyubi. The Court ordered, “List these applications along with I.A. No…on December 01, 2025.” The six-month deadline to upload details of all registered waqf properties across India on the UMEED portal is nearing its end. The portal was launched by the Centre on June 6, 2025, to create a digital inventory after geo-tagging waqf properties nationwide. Earlier, on September 15, the Supreme Court gave an interim order staying some key provisions of the Waqf (Amendment) Act, 2025. This included stopping a clause that only persons practicing Islam for five years could create waqf. However, the Court did not stay the entire law, stating it is presumed constitutional. The Court also held that the government’s decision to remove the 'waqf by user' provision was not arbitrary and dismissed claims that waqf lands would be seized by governments as “no water.” ‘Waqf by user’ means a property can be recognized as waqf based on long-term religious or charitable use, even without formal written declaration. The Supreme Court’s hearing on December 1 will decide if the deadline for registering waqf properties under the UMEED portal will be extended.
