Leh Violence Probe Deadline Extended by 10 Days at LAB's Request
November 29, 2025
The Judicial Inquiry Commission probing the Leh violence has extended its deadline for recording statements and submitting evidence by 10 days. This followed a formal request from the Leh Apex Body (LAB). The three-member commission is headed by former Supreme Court judge B.S. Chauhan. It was appointed by the Ministry of Home Affairs on October 17 to investigate the events behind the serious law and order breakdown in Leh on September 24. It also reviews police actions and the incident that caused four deaths, including a 1999 Kargil war veteran.
The violence erupted during protests demanding Statehood and Sixth Schedule status for Ladakh. The clashes between security forces and protesters resulted in four civilian deaths and around 90 injuries, heightening tensions during a months-long agitation.
According to an order issued on November 28, the commission received a written request from the LAB's co-chairman on November 27. The request asked for more time because "many people still want to give their statements and submit evidence before the commission."
Initially, the deadline was November 28. Justice B.S. Chauhan considered the plea virtually and agreed to extend it until December 8. Mohan Singh Parihar, judicial secretary to the commission, confirmed the decision, saying this will allow more witnesses to come forward.
The Leh Apex Body is a union of social, political, and religious groups leading the movement for constitutional protections in Ladakh. They continue to demand Statehood for Ladakh and inclusion under the Constitution's Sixth Schedule.
