UK MPs Push for More Aid and Visas for Jamaicans After Hurricane Melissa Devastation
November 29, 2025
British MPs have called on the UK government to increase aid and issue humanitarian visas for Jamaicans after Hurricane Melissa devastated the country. The storm affected nearly 1 million people and damaged around 150,000 homes, causing losses estimated at $8 billion. The UK has so far pledged £7.5 million in emergency funds but many say this is not enough. Dawn Butler, Labour MP for Brent East, wrote to the home secretary seeking temporary humanitarian visas and fee waivers for vulnerable Jamaicans who could stay with UK relatives. Butler said, “The UK has a long and enduring relationship with Jamaica and I am confident that, with compassion and collaboration, we can play a vital role in supporting those most in need during the difficult period.” Diane Abbott, MP for Hackney North and Stoke Newington, stressed that Jamaica needs long-term help, saying, “People need to understand the gravity of the situation. And that it’s going to take a long time and a lot of resources to [rebuild].” Windrush activist Euen Herbert-Small compared the situation to the UK's support for Ukrainians. He said, “Jamaica is a Commonwealth country. The king is head of state... We did it for Ukraine. We can definitely do it for Jamaica.” Rosalea Hamilton, head of the Lasco Chin foundation working in Jamaica, pointed out the need for special consideration because King Charles is also Jamaica’s head of state. Amid the disaster, Jamaica is also facing a leptospirosis outbreak with 11 confirmed deaths. Health Minister Dr Christopher Tufton said hospitals are prepared to treat the disease. The UK Green party highlighted the link between climate justice and the legacy of slavery, calling for faster action on UK climate responsibilities. The Global Afro-Descendant Climate Justice Collaborative said Hurricane Melissa's damage shows how African-descended people suffer most from environmental harm caused by colonialism and industrialization.
