Tamil Nadu government has introduced a new Goat & Sheep Breeding Policy focused on improving meat production and conserving native breeds. The policy promotes an open nucleus breeding system for goats and selective breeding with top rams for sheep. It will start with nucleus herds in each district, holding 20 male and 200 female native breed animals. Artificial Insemination (AI) will be introduced through pilot projects to upgrade genetic quality. "Nucleus farms will be established to serve as sources of elite breeding stock," said the policy. The top male offspring will be selected as breeding bucks and shared across blocks for breeding either naturally or by AI. According to the 20th Livestock Census, Tamil Nadu has 45 lakh sheep and 98 lakh goats. Recognised sheep breeds include Mecheri, Kilakarisal, and Vembur among others. Kanni Adu, Kodi Adu, and Salem Black are popular goat breeds. The policy notes high meat demand due to the largely non-vegetarian population. The policy also lays out a plan for data recording, semen production units, pure breeding, animal information systems, insurance, credit, and cooperative societies for sheep and goat farmers. A technical committee and certification processes for breeding bucks and rams will be formed to ensure quality control. This comprehensive approach aims to raise livestock quality and support breed conservation while meeting Tamil Nadu’s growing meat consumption needs.
