The Yadgir Zilla Panchayat started a special tax recovery drive on November 27 with the slogan “Pay your tax and exercise your responsibility” (Terige pavatisi, nimma jawabdari chalayisi). They collected a record ₹2,68,82,350 in just one day.
A team made of district nodal officers, panchayat officers, tax collectors, and women members of self-help groups reached out to the public. They helped people pay taxes via mobile, Bapuji Service Centres, and UPI payments.
Lavish Ordia, Chief Executive Officer of Zilla Panchayat, told The Hindu, “Our officers’ team put in hectic efforts, and as a result of it, we recovered ₹2,68,82,350 in tax, and it is a record-breaking recovery in a single day.” Of this, ₹2,26,28,935 came from land and buildings and ₹42,53,415 from other sources.
Before the drive, Yadgir district was 27th in tax collection. After collecting this high amount on November 27, it jumped to 16th place. So far, the district has collected ₹8.68 crore against a demand of ₹17.32 crore.
The gram panchayats with the highest tax recoveries on November 27 include Gogi with ₹12,61,714, Maddarki ₹8,64,719, and Hattikuni ₹5,70,480, among others.
Mr Ordia said, “Minister for Rural Development and Panchayat Raj Priyank Kharge held a meeting to discuss unrecovered taxes and motivated officers on the initiatives to be taken. He also advised proper use of the recovered tax for village development.”
The ₹2.68 crore recovered will be used to improve village infrastructure like streetlights, clean water, and other basic needs under the Karnataka Gram Swaraj & Panchayat Raj Act 1993. The CEO congratulated all officers and staff involved in this drive.
