Telangana to Procure 3,000 MW Solar Power and Upgrade Power Lines Underground
November 29, 2025
The Telangana government has approved the purchase of 3,000 megawatts (MW) of solar power over five years. This will be done through competitive bidding to meet renewable energy targets and power consumption obligations.
The Telangana Power Planning and Coordination Committee (TGPPCC) identified a gap in renewable power and projected the need for 12,000 MW additional renewable energy by 2030. The Telangana Renewable Energy Development Corporation suggested procuring 5,000 MW of solar power with the help of Discoms.
After reviewing, the government approved a phased procurement of 3,000 MW solar power. This will take place in phases: 1,000 MW by June 2026, 1,000 MW by December 2026, and the final 1,000 MW by June 2027.
In another major move, the government cleared a ₹4,051 crore project to convert overhead electricity lines to underground cables in metro zones. This includes areas like Banjara Hills, Secunderabad, Hyderabad Central, and Hyderabad South circles.
The underground cabling project involves 180 km of exclusive 33 kV lines, 2,396 km of exclusive 11 kV lines, and various combinations of 33 kV, 11 kV, and low-tension cables. It also covers 825 km of main road overhead lines and 3,899 km of optical fiber cable (OFC).
This plan aims to modernize power transmission and distribution for better reliability and aesthetics in busy metro zones.
