Ukraine Strikes Russian Oil Tankers in Black Sea with Naval Drones
November 30, 2025
Ukraine has launched attacks on two Russian oil tankers in the Black Sea using naval drones. Ukrainian officials confirmed the tankers, named Kairos and Virat and flagged to Gambia, were hit off the Turkish coast on Friday, with Virat struck again on Saturday. Footage shows drones speeding into the ships and exploding, causing large fires and black smoke, though no casualties were reported. The strikes target Russia’s 'shadow fleet'—old tankers used to evade Western sanctions after Russia’s 2022 invasion of Ukraine. Both tankers are on sanctions lists. Ukrainian Sea Baby drones, produced by the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU), were reportedly used. Turkey aided the ships by trying to extinguish fires. These attacks signal a new warning from Ukraine that ships carrying Russian oil in the Black Sea face direct attacks, not just sanctions. Separately, the Caspian Pipeline Consortium halted loading at Russia’s Novorossiysk port after unmanned boat attacks damaged a mooring point. Meanwhile, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said a delegation led by Rustem Umerov is heading to the US to continue peace talks following the resignation of Andriy Yermak, the previous lead negotiator. The delegation is expected to meet US officials in Florida. US envoy Steve Witkoff is scheduled to hold Moscow talks next week.
