November 29, 2025
India intensified humanitarian aid for Sri Lanka on November 29, 2025, after Cyclone Ditwah killed at least 159 people. The Indian Navy sent the aircraft carrier INS Vikrant and INS Udaygiri to help families hit by the cyclone. Two large cargo aircraft carried 21 tonnes of relief supplies to Colombo.
Additionally, INS Sukanya left Vishakhapatnam with relief goods and is expected in Sri Lanka soon. The High Commission of India in Colombo is assisting stranded Indian travelers with food and water after flight cancellations.
Two National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) teams, including 80 rescuers and four trained dogs led by Commandant P. K. Tiwary, flew from Hindon Air Force Station to Colombo. They carry boats, hydraulic rescue tools, communication devices, first aid kits, and other essential gear. Indian Navy helicopters rescued people from flooded areas.
Inside India, NDRF has 14 teams ready in coastal Tamil Nadu districts vulnerable to the cyclone, with more teams heading to Puducherry and Chennai. The NDRF coordinates closely with the India Meteorological Department, national and state agencies, and the Foreign Ministry for a smooth response.
According to the India Meteorological Department, Cyclone Ditwah moved northwards at 10 kmph near the southwest Bay of Bengal and is about 80 km northeast of Jaffna in Sri Lanka. It is expected to reach near North Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and south Andhra Pradesh coasts by early November 30.
Heavy rain will hit most parts of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry, with possible extremely heavy showers along the coast. Coastal Andhra Pradesh, Yanam, and Rayalaseema will also see heavy rain on November 30. The storm should weaken by Monday off the Andhra coast.
