Cyclone Ditwah Hits South Tamil Nadu, India Sends Aid to Sri Lanka
November 30, 2025
Cyclone Ditwah was moving slowly at 5 kmph on Sunday early morning, centered over the southwest Bay of Bengal and near north Sri Lanka and Tamil Nadu coasts. It was about 160 km south-southeast of Puducherry and 250 km south of Chennai at 2:30 a.m. The Regional Meteorological Centre said heavy rain would mainly affect northern Tamil Nadu on Sunday, easing from Monday. Since Friday night, the cyclone's heavy rains flooded several south coastal and delta districts in Tamil Nadu. Residential areas were waterlogged, crops damaged, and salt pans submerged as the cyclone moved closer to the coast.
Meanwhile, India stepped up humanitarian help for Sri Lanka, which faced severe impact from Cyclone Ditwah. At least 159 people have died there. India launched Operation Sagar Bandhu on Saturday, sending INS Vikrant and INS Udaygiri naval ships to help affected families. Two large cargo planes also flew 21 tonnes of relief materials to Colombo.
