Kaithi Lambadas: Telangana’s Forest Tribal Community with Distinct Traditions
November 30, 2025
Travel on Telangana’s Kamareddy-Banswada road through dense forests to reach small hamlets called thandas, where the Kaithi Lambadas live. This tribal community looks strikingly different with their unique traditional dress. They are vegetarians who farm and graze cattle. Chadmal thanda, the largest village in Gandhari mandal, once faced violent clashes due to left-wing extremism. Kaithi Lambadas came centuries ago from Uttar Pradesh, fleeing violence in Mathura. Two brothers, Lakkimsha and Makkamsha, were said to be the first migrants here. Their ancestors wore special clothes to scare wild animals, including hair shaped like a knife blade, stitched mirrors, big bangles, and anklets. Their tattoos and shiny ornaments made them look larger. Men wore dhotis, shirts, and turbans. Over 40,000 Kaithi Lambadas live in Telangana’s Adilabad and Nizamabad areas today. They deeply worship Lord Krishna and celebrate Janmashtami with songs, dance, and offerings of cow’s milk. Their style and customs set them apart from other Lambada groups. Women knit colorful bands for weddings and wear heavy earrings called Ladi. The traditional khait haircut is fading among youth as it is time-consuming and causes hair loss. Women wear thick wankidi anklets to protect against wild animals. The community keeps its traditions alive through arts, celebrations, and farming life in their mud homes. These close-knit people blend nature, faith, and culture into a vivid way of life.
