Boat Capsizes on Lake Maï-Ndombe, Killing 20; Several Still Missing
November 30, 2025
At least 20 people died when a boat capsized on Lake Maï-Ndombe in northwestern Congo. Several others are still missing. The boat was traveling from Kiri to Kinshasa. The local Diocese said it included a newly ordained Catholic deacon. The accident happened between Bobeni and Lobeke villages around 8 pm on Thursday night, said Emmanuel Bola, a resident of nearby Inongo. The government has not given an official death count. Kevani Nkoso, governor of Maï-Ndombe province, said, "We are awaiting details from the teams deployed to the field to determine the number of people killed and the number of survivors." Boat accidents have become more common in Congo. Many people rely on wooden boats due to poor roads. These boats are often overcrowded, have no life jackets, and travel at night. These conditions make rescue hard and many bodies go missing. Earlier this month, another capsizing left 64 people missing. In September, two separate accidents killed at least 193 people. State media blamed "improper loading and night navigation."
