UAE Lets Visitors Drive With Home Licenses and Residents Exchange Easily
November 30, 2025
The UAE has updated its driving license system, making it easier for visitors and residents to drive legally. Visitors from 52 countries can now drive using their home country’s licenses without needing temporary permits or tests. This rule applies only if they are not UAE residents. Residents from these countries can exchange their foreign driving licenses for UAE licenses without having to take theory or road tests. The exchange requires a valid UAE residence permit, age 17 or above, a medical vision test, and some paperwork. The process costs AED 600 and is handled digitally via the MuroorKhous platform. Eligible vehicle types are mainly motorcycles and light vehicles, depending on nationality agreements. For GCC nationals, visiting drivers can use their own licenses, but residents must exchange theirs for UAE ones through the official system. Those from non-eligible countries must take tests to get a UAE license. This new framework simplifies driving rules and helps visitors and residents move around easily while living or visiting the UAE.
