BSF Tripura Frontier Inspector General (IG) Aloke Kumar Chakraborty said on Sunday, November 30, 2025, that the Centre is considering a new design for barbed wire fencing along the India-Bangladesh border. India shares a 4,096 km border with Bangladesh, with Tripura alone having 856 km of it. "Barbed wire fencing in most places along the India-Bangladesh Border (IBB) has outlived its life. In Tripura, weather conditions [heavy rainfall] have also affected the fencing along the international border. We are in the process of replacing the old fencing," he told PTI. The proposal to erect new and improved fencing is currently under active consideration by the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA). "We are hopeful that the erection of a new design of fencing will start very shortly to enhance the border management," said IG Chakraborty. He added that the situation along the India-Bangladesh border is "normal." The BSF IG highlighted the cordial and cooperative relationship between Indian border guards and the Bangladesh Border Guard (BGB). "Being the first line of the defence, the BSF is always alert to thwart any attempt of peace along the international border," he said. Scheduled joint patrolling is conducted regularly, with special patrolling, border contact, and casualty contact continuing as well, although a higher-level meeting is awaited. On the issue of cattle smuggling, IG Chakraborty said the BSF maintains control over the zero line and border haats to counter the problem. "We normally hand over the recovered cattle heads to Dhyan Foundation, but when it runs out of space, the BSF gives them to the local police authority for disposal," he explained.
