Hundreds of displaced people protested near Raj Bhavan in Imphal on Sunday, November 30, 2025. They demanded to be allowed to return to their homes. The group came from relief camps in Churachandpur, Kangpokpi, Imphal West, and Imphal East. These people were displaced due to ethnic violence that started in May 2023. They raised slogans like "Displaced lives matter," "people boycott Sangai festival," "rights first tourism later," and "ensure our fundamental rights." Security forces stopped the protesters near Kangla Gate, about 200 meters from Raj Bhavan. The crowd was then redirected towards Uripok area in Imphal West. Irom Abung Meitei, a displaced person from Churachandpur, said, "The displaced people gathered here today to stage a protest due to mounting frustration towards the government. The Sangai festival is being held by claiming normalcy while ignoring the plights of the displaced persons." He added, "... we will take our protests further in the coming days by not returning to relief camps." Since the Sangai Festival began on November 21, clashes between internally displaced persons (IDPs) and security forces have occurred multiple times. The IDPs and civil society groups demand that the government allow them to return home, as the festival signals restored normalcy. Since the violence began, more than 260 people have died, and thousands remain homeless across the region due to conflicts between the Imphal Valley-based Meiteis and adjoining hills-based Kukis.
