The Telangana State AIDS Control Society (TGSACS) has announced steady progress in controlling HIV in the state. Telangana's adult HIV prevalence rate dropped from 0.44% in 2023 to 0.41% in 2025, marking a 58% decrease in new infections. This progress aligns with the national target to eliminate AIDS as a public health threat by 2030.
The state is advancing towards the global UNAIDS 95-95-95 targets. These targets ensure that 95% of people with HIV know their status, 95% of those are on antiretroviral therapy (ART), and 95% on treatment achieve viral suppression. Telangana set a goal to cover 1,56,961 individuals and has reached 1,43,173 or 91.2% so far.
Vasam Venkateshwar Reddy, project director of TGSACS, said, "This is due to the continuous expansion of HIV testing services across all districts, community outreach through civil society groups and health facilities, and extended access through mobile testing units and targeted intervention sites."
HIV-related deaths in Telangana have also fallen. Between 2023 and 2024, deaths dropped by 977, a 16.5% reduction. Another fall of 193 deaths (3.9%) occurred between 2024 and 2025. Better ART adherence, CD4 and viral load testing, and managing infections early helped save lives.
District outreach and prevention, awareness campaigns for youth, workers, students, and women, plus regular condom distribution and stronger STI clinic services, also contributed. Mr. Reddy added, "District-level outreach and prevention activities, along with awareness among youth, workers, students, and women’s groups, have contributed to safer practices and early detection."
Currently, Telangana has 22 government ART centres and 8 private hospital ART centres. These provide improved medicine availability, counselling, and lab services. Large community awareness programs supported the progress.
Testing efforts from 2023 to 2025 were strong. Over 8,21,508 samples from general and antenatal care were screened, finding 5,517 HIV positive cases. Social support through the Cheyutha program helped more people each year, with beneficiaries rising from 34,656 in 2023 to 45,374 in 2025 so far.
These efforts paint a hopeful picture as Telangana moves closer to making HIV a manageable condition, boosting health and saving lives ahead of the 2030 elimination goal.
